Of those 100 in exodus, 20 soon after joined former rival SNK and formed the semi-indipendent Nazca Corporation.Īfter being tasked to port some games to home consoles, Nazca was finally given the chance to develop new titles with its 2 team-strong pool of developers, which were Neo Turf Masters, and Metal Slu g.ĭevelopment of Metal Slug wasn't exactly smooth, at first the game revolved solely around controlling the titular Metal Slug, with POWs coming to lend a hand, but due to the tepid reception to the game in a location test at Osaka and doubts from upper management, the difficult decision had to be made to implement on-foot gameplay, which caused a massive crunch period to rework the game to retrofit the new gameplay style (such as lengthening the stages and redesigning them). Irem was a developer and arcade manufacturer, known for titles such as Moon Patrol, R-Type, In the Hunt and the GunForce series (none of which I've ever touched, sorry).Įverything was well and good until in 1994 Irem ceased all videogame development and shut down its gaming division, leaving roughly 100 employees without a job and to search for a new company (famously some developers stuck with the company until the bitter end to ship Gunforce II, without time to implement a staff credits roll). To talk about Metal Slug's beginnings, we have to start from Irem.
